My latest trip to Thailand, the land of smiles, brought me to the new DoubleTree by Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok, Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok, and Hilton Pattaya. The three hotels are charming in its own way and so delightfully beautiful, I was spasming left and right from the visual treats.
First up, DoubleTree by Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok. Located in the center of Sukhumvit’s buzzing shopping and nightlife districts, DoubleTree by Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok is just a five-minute walk from the Phrom Phong BTS station (ie. where Emporium shopping complex is, and it’s also one stop away from Asok station where Terminal 21 shopping mall is). Upon arrival, I was welcomed with a freshly baked cookie – still warm in my hands. Cookie?! It symbolizes the simple act of care and thoughtfulness that makes a stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton comfortable as soon as you step into the grand lobby.
The hospitality and comfort of the hotel extends beyond the cookie though, as I explored the hotel and was wowed by the thoughtful interior furnishing.
A nod to mid-century modern aesthetics, upholstered wingback chairs, wood living room cabinets, leather banquettes, vintage phonographs, transistor radios, cameras, wall clocks can be seen throughout the hotel. I fell in love immediately, the decor was done exceptionally well as the mid-century modern theme succeeded in imparting a sense of coziness. Kinda like walking into a cross between a Pleasantville home and an Eames studio.
Interesting to note is the lighting in the hotel’s main restaurant, Dee Lite. An interpretation of Loi Kratong (Thai Lantern Festival) has been expressed in the custom light fixtures hung randomly across the ceiling on dark metal grids, casting a reflection of glowing spots on the polished floors below. Such a dreamy sight. I’d like to experience the actual lantern festival one day. *beginning to compile my wishlist*
Still foaming in the mouth from seeing all the cozy furnishing at DoubleTree.
Dee Lite serves buffet lunch, offering a really grand spread of international fare including Italian, Japanese and Thai, plus a decadent dessert assortments displayed in a bookcase (boo, I didn’t take a photo). I ate a little bit and went upstairs to lounge by the pool for a bit as I got up super early that morning to hop on a Singapore Airlines flight to get to Bangkok.
Speaking of flight, I’m so glad I flew Singapore Airlines this time. It’s my preferred airlines since they have an excellent track record of being on-time, unlike that other time I went to BKK with my bestie and flew Jetstar – we were stuck on the tarmac for a good two and half hours (engine issue), before the captain declared flight was cancelled so we all had to go back to the terminal and then wait for another four hours in order to get the next flight out. That was painful and almost induced a bladder infection + hunger rage. I don’t experience this with SQ, and I enjoy the perks of priority check-in, priority boarding, lounge access, etc. as a KrisFlyer Gold member. Yay.
Mosaic, the poolside bar inside DoubleTree, sports a laid back, semi-alfresco space with a centerpiece wall mural of Marilyn Monroe made of, what else… mosaic tiles, of course.
More retro decor seen at Mosaic, in keeping with the hotel’s theme.
Every corner inside this hotel is so photogenic. The hotel setup is really casual, unpretentious and heartwarming with friendly staff. And it was accessible too, as the Phrom Pong BTS station is just a half block walk away. When in Bangkok, the most important factor for me is hotel location (read: convenience, close to BTS and easy access to shopping, food and massage). I’m sure it goes the same way for you too.
… to be continued.
