Waterfront Food Trail at Riverside Point

27 June, 2011

The Moonberry Blog https://blog.moonberry.com

WHAT: Waterfront Food Trail
WHY: Food tasting
WHERE: Riverside Point

Riverside Point is home to four great venues for eating and drinking al fresco by the river (Singapore River, that is). I have been here a handful of times before, but on this particular day it was most interesting because I got to hop from one resto to another, totalling four back-to-back. I had inquired with my friend Paul in Cali (he’s a food-tasting veteran) in advance whether it’s permissible to not finish everything served, because you know… a girl can only eat so much, but at the same time I don’t want to be rude and offend the chef(s). He said it’s ok, so I was relieved to know that. Don’t get me wrong, I *love* food but I get full as quickly as I get hungry. More so, I don’t love the feeling of having bricks in the stomach whenever I have stuffed myself beyond limit; it hurts. Eating should be an enjoyment, not a punishment. Yeah, I eat like a bird sometimes.

Nonetheless, this was a feast I wasn’t going to pass up on! So come follow me on my Waterfront Feast. First stop is Jumbo Seafood, second Cafe Iguana, third Harry’s Bar and last, Brewerkz Restaurant & Microbrewery. Let’s go and get gastronomically-giddy together!

Jumbo Seafood @ Riverside

✔ Chilli Crab

✔ Salted Egg Golden Prawns

I am no stranger to Jumbo Seafood, I’ve been to the ones at Dempsey, East Coast and Riverside many times before. Jumbo Seafood is known for their chili crabs (a must-eat when in Singapore). I have had chili crabs at many places before, including making my own at home, and I will say that the version served at Jumbo Seafood tastes the best.

Fried mantous on the side is a must, they’re the perfect companion to dip into that oozy-woozy delicious gravy.

Another star dish at Jumbo Seafood is the Salted Egg Golden Prawns, which is VERY VERY good. I’ve tried making this at home also, but it’s just not the same as the ones made by pros. This dish is basically deep fried shrimps, coated with a thick coating of sauce made of salted egg yolk and cream. It is really super delicious. I heart salted egg yolk… :9 You must order this when you’re at Jumbo Seafood; I always do. Oh, I’m salivating just at the thought of this dish.

Cafe Iguana

✔ Oro Azul Anejo Margarita

✔ Red Snapper Enchiladas

I don’t eat Mexican food very often but I know there’s a difference between Cal-Mex and Tex-Mex. The former is Californian version, the latter Texan; I’ve had both and my preference leans towards Tex-Mex. At this event, I learned that there is a New Mexico-Mex too, which I personally haven’t tried. From what I gathered though, good Mexican food is hard to come by in Singapore so it was a treat to sample the Red Snapper Enchiladas at Cafe Iguana. The red snapper was tasty and perfectly grilled, with a smoky undertone. It was most delicious and you must try it.

The margarita which I had here was one of the best I’ve ever had! I normally don’t order margaritas because I usually find them very tart and bitter. But this Oro Azul Anejo Margarita was ultra smooth. The salt rimming the glass brought out the sweetness in the tequila (which frankly, had never tasted sweet to me before; maybe coz I’ve only had the cheap variety). I can definitely go back for more of this! I learned that margaritas are best when they’re on the rocks, instead of blended because the slushy tends to dilute the tequila flavour too much making the margarita indiscernible.

Harry’s Bar

✔ Fish & Chips

✔ Peach Bellini

✔ Caipirinha

The next stop was Harry’s Bar, where I had some drinks to wash down a plate of Fish & Chips. The fish and chip was nice, while the bellini was pulpy and satisfying, but what stood out for me was the Caipirinha. Caipirinha is Brazil’s national cocktail, made with sugar cane rum, sugar and lime. So yes, it is a sweet drink. But not the kind that comes with an umbrella on top. Harry’s version was outta this world. Very very yummy! I highly recommended it.

Brewerkz Restaurant & Microbrewery

✔ Buffalo Wings.

✔ Beer Sampler: Kolsch Beer, Steam Beer, Scholar Red Beer, Pilsner, Oatmeal Stout and Dragonfruit Beer.

Ahhhh, beer and wings. They go so well together. Brewerkz has different beers on tap and the flavours are constantly being rotated, so anytime you are at Brewerkz, there’s always something new to try. I sampled several different varieties, ranging from light to dark to robust to fruity. My fave would have to be the Kolsch beer, because it went down really smoothly. The buffalo wings were good too, although the Suicide level wasn’t all that hot. Adequately peppery and definitely hit the spot. Who can say no to buffalo wings? :p

This was our last stop so we were comfortably sloshed at this time. Just kidding. :) *hic*

By the way, this event was organized by omy.sg and the crew was there to videotape interviews. Watch out for it and again I hope I didn’t sound stupid. (I’ve been getting interviewed on camera left and right lately, I should be getting the hang of this by now but no. -__-)

With the two lovely reps from Far East Square, who manages the fine establishments covered here and made this food tasting event possible. Thank you!

And last but not least, a big thank you to omy.sg for the invitation. The event was very enjoyable and I am mighty glad I exerted enough self-control not to be rolling myself home at the end of this event. There’s an on-going promotion (thru 31 July 2011) for these places I’ve covered here, so please take advantage and try out the food/drinks which have been featured in this blog post. I am definitely planning to go back for more margaritas and caipirinhas soon! :9~
