Writing Is Not A Race

Lately when I hang out with fellow bloggers, we often commiserate about our blog backlogs. Yup, if you’re a blogger reading this, you know EXACTLY what I’m talking about. It’s like a perpetual monkey that won’t get off your back. And the longer you wait to bang those blog posts out, the less motivated you become and the mere thought of writing the posts alone is enough to fill you with dread sometimes.

I once asked blogger friends, how long do they spend on average on a blog post? I think most answered 2 hours – plus, minus. If your answer is different, please enlighten and leave a comment below ok? So let’s say if we spend about 2 hours per post, I’m guessing these two hours are being spent on image processing, resizing, editing, watermarking, uploading, renaming, captioning, inserting. That doesn’t quite leave a lot of time to actually write, does it? I suppose that’s why most blogs aren’t very wordy either. Lotsa photos accompanied by snippets of words here and there.

I don’t see anything wrong with that, after all everyone has a very short attention span these days. (Me. *raising hand*). No one has the bandwidth and focus to read through paragraphs and paragraphs of wordy text, they just wanna scroll quickly thru the images and get the cliffs notes on what had taken place. (Me again. *raising hand*). With that said though, writing shouldn’t be such a chore and it is often so much more intimate and personal than photos. Yeah yeah, a picture says a thousand words – sure, but not really saying anything unique or different when the same/similar pictures are replicated all over the internet on other blogs too.

Recently I came across this short article “Gentle Reminders About Writing” by Roxane Gay. I really like that article, I find it to be very encouraging and I agree with what she’s written.

Do you want to be known for writing a lot or for writing well? – Roxane Gay

Oh, if any of you guys have a great and efficient blogging workflow that you are willing to share, please do. My food blogger pal, AiMakan, tells me that she blogs on-the-go via her smartphone! Now that’s unconventional but at the same time a very practical multi-tasking solution. It is interesting to know what goes on behind-the-scenes of producing a blog article, what your blogging process and styles are like, etc. So please share your stories/methods, yah?

Blog-and-roll,
-MB.
