With the opening of Alfero Gelato in MacPherson Lane and Marina Square, Singaporeans can look forward to more great tasting treats so authentic, even the godfather approves of it. Things just got more exciting in food haven Singapore!
Alfero Gelato is owned and run by Marco Alfero, who came from Turin, Italy. Alfero Gelato, as strictly administered by Marco himself, is made using premium ingredients imported from Italy and each process of the gelato-making is done painstakingly without missing a step in his gelato lab.
Made using only the finest quality ingredients imported from Italy and other parts of Europe, Alfero Gelato is stored in pozzetto cabinets where exposure to light and air is greatly reduced, thus ensuring the smoothness and quality of the ice cream. This is a century-old practice of storing gelato in Italy and Alfero Gelato is the first cafe in Singapore to use this method. Marco believes in serving only the best-tasting gelato to his customers, which is why he is the only man in Singapore who keeps his gelato covered while on display (unlike other ice cream cafes which display their products in full glory while compromising on taste and texture of their creams). So please don’t mistake these metal cans are soup containers, they are used to store gelato.
My foodie partner-in-crime, Daniel from Daniel Food Diary, and I are eager to sample the various flavors! Now, when it comes to flavors, we all have our individual preferences. Generally, I’m not a chocolate person (although Alfero Gelato comes in Chocolate flavor, of course). Some of us may like the nutty ones, or fruity ones, or creamy ones. Alfero Gelato has many to choose from, with new interesting additions regularly added to the menu.
Here’s the best-selling Pistachio and Hazelnut flavors. I love both of these because they have an organic taste (meaning, the raw ingredients are rich and fresh to the palate). And they are not overly sweet or creamy, and definitely very smooth. The good news is, I learned that gelato, even though it contains dairy products, is relatively low fat and low calorie compared to normal ice cream. *woot*
This flavor is called Nuts About You, which is a combination of nougat, hazelnut and almond. It reminds me of a candy bar and I think this will be a hit with the kiddos.
Biancaneve is a traditional Italian flavor, which is sorta a milk and honey flavor. I think of this as a kicked-up version of good ole’ vanilla and it’s definitely way better.
Now, if you have an affinity to fruity flavors, this Mango gelato has a full-bodied flavor as it incorporates fresh mangos imported from India. There are other fruity flavors at Alfero Gelato also, such as Durian, Passionfruit, Raspberry and Lemon. I did sample the Durian which is a-okay for my tastebuds (ie. it isn’t repulsive for a non-Durian person like me). I think that durian lovers won’t be disappointed but to be sure, why don’t you go sample it yourself and let me know if you agree?
After sampling all of the gelato flavors, I gotta agree with others that Marco is the Godfather of Gelato. ;p I can appreciate the hard work which he had put into the creation of his gelato and he is truly an artisan in this craft of gelato making.
