Gotta love indie magazines. They definitely have an edge on the mainstream when it comes to creativity because indies have no boundaries in photography, styling and editorial content. It’s a great source of inspiration in every aspect for me – curation of content, visual execution, editorial style and format. During my design school years, Editorial Design was one of my fave classes and once upon a time, I’d even entertained the idea of starting my own magazine. Admittedly I still harbor that fantasy; but keeping this blog in the meantime is working out better for me so far.
Thing with indie titles is, they are lesser-known, niche, and often produced in small print runs only. In other words, not very easy to find. I’m happy to discover Allscript, a Singapore magazine store founded in 1991 that carries over 3000 curated titles and offering the best editorial content to magazine lovers and purveyors of trends.
I looked up the online curated catalog and found so many intriguing titles in the Architecture & Design, Art / Culture / Fashion, Food & Drink, and Home & Garden departments.
One of the titles that I got my hands on is Betty Magazine – a biannual publication from London and filled with “how-to” guides; vintage-inspired fashion and lifestyle tips that empower and unify women with a youthful state of mind and a nostalgic heart. Page after page of pretty photographs, tutorials and interviews.
There are so many other titles that caught my eye too, such as Frankie, Fricote, Gratuitous Type, and Uppercase – just to name a few. So many to choose from! Can’t decide which ones I want to read. Luckily, Allscript happens to be the first in Singapore to offer Tailored by Allscript — a bespoke magazine subscription service where a new title each month is carefully handpicked to suit your interests. Thanks to free shipping, all magazine orders in Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia arrive at your doorstep with no additional shipping fee.
These publications aren’t cheap but they aren’t magazines that you throw out after reading either. Most likely, you’ll start collecting them and refer to the beautiful pages again and again. Which brings me to Allscript’s newly launched membership program. Becoming a member entitles you to benefits that applies to both their physical and online stores (namely, 10% discount for purchases and access to exclusive members’ only promos and sales). How to become an Allscript member? Simply spend $25 to qualify and receive 10% off at all Allscript stores for a year. The first 50 qualifying members will also receive a limited-edition Allscript Membership Card. This promotion ends 31 May.
