If you’re visiting Taipei and craving an authentic Taiwanese experience, look no further than Hong Rui Zhen Sandwich (洪瑞珍三明治). This beloved sandwich shop has been a staple in Taiwan for decades, known for its simple yet incredibly satisfying flavors. Whether you’re a local or a traveler, biting into one of their fluffy sandwiches is an experience you won’t forget. Personally I have been a fan of Hong Rui Zhen Sandwich for over a decade and every time I visit Taipei, I always buy at least a box to bring back with me.
In this post, I’ll dive into the history of Hong Rui Zhen, their famous signature sandwich, and the variety of flavors that keep customers coming back for more.
The History of Hong Rui Zhen Sandwich
Hong Rui Zhen first opened its doors in Taichung in 1947, starting as a small bakery before gaining fame for its iconic sandwiches. Over the years, the brand expanded across Taiwan, with locations in major Taiwanese cities. They have even branched out overseas to Korea and Japan.
What makes Hong Rui Zhen stand out is its commitment to simplicity and quality. Unlike overstuffed Western-style sandwiches, their version is light, delicate, and perfectly balanced—a true representation of Taiwanese comfort food. These iconic sandwiches are very popular and have spurred plenty of inferior copycat versions.

The Signature Hong Rui Zhen Sandwich
The star of the menu is the Classic Ham & Cheese Sandwich (中華滿漢三明治), a deceptively simple creation that packs a delightful punch. Here’s what makes it so special:
- Fluffy White Bread – Incredibly soft and fresh.
- Creamy Homemade Mayonnaise – The star ingredient! A light mayonnaise-based dressing that is slightly sweet and has a whipped butter airy texture.
- Ham & Egg – Thinly sliced ham and a delicate layer of omelette for savory depth.
- Cheese – A slice of American cheese for extra creaminess.
- A Touch of Butter – Just enough to bind every ingredient together without overpowering their flavors.
The magic lies in the perfect harmony of textures and tastes—each bite is creamy, slightly sweet, and satisfyingly savory. It’s no wonder people buy boxes of these sandwiches to take home! I recall watching a Taiwanese tv news program about how Japanese and Hong Kong tourists would buy boxes and boxes of these sandwiches.

In addition to high quality and great flavors, personally I think Hong Rui Zhen Sandwiches also appeal due to visual presentation. Every layer inside the sandwich is neatly assembled and the amount of individual ingredient is just right. Not overstuffed or bulging.
Last time these sandwiches used to be individually hand-wrapped in paper, in a simple origami fold that was a delight to unwrap. I remember the joy of unwrapping each sandwich, simply marvelling at the ingenious way it was wrapped, and would try to rewrap it back (unsuccessfully and not as neat). Anyway, the sandwiches are no longer wrapped in paper and are individually packed in plastic instead now.

Other Must-Try Flavors at Hong Rui Zhen
While the Classic Ham & Cheese Sandwich is delicious, the other sandwich flavors are also worth trying. During my recent trip, I picked up a couple of limited edition variations too. Here are some favorites:

1. Whole Wheat Ham Sandwich (麥類火腿三明治)
2. Whole Wheat Cheese Sandwich (麥類起司三明治)
A healthier take on the classic, using whole wheat bread while keeping the same delicious fillings. I have been waiting for a version that includes both ham and cheese together in a whole wheat sandwich, but so far there is no such combination yet. Either way, these are tasty.

3. Blueberry Jam Cheese Sandwich (藍莓起司三明治)
4. Strawberry Jam Cheese Sandwich (草莓起司三明治)
Sweet options for those with a sweet tooth! Fluffy bread layered with fruit jam, cheese, and butter—simple yet nostalgic. Don’t worry, the fruit jams aren’t overly sweet. I can’t decide between blueberry and strawberry, I think they are equally delicious so I normally just get both. [ grin ] Paired with cheese, the sweet savory combination is irresistible.
5. Pistachio Sandwich (開心果果三明治)
This is my first time trying this flavor. In between layers of pistachio jam, there’s a layer of crushed candied walnuts that gives this sandwich a crunchy texture that’s unlike the other variations.

6. Strawberry Milk Mochi Sandwich (草莓牛奶麻糬三明治)
7. Taro Pork Floss Sandwich (芋泥肉鬆三明治)
These two are limited edition variations so I grabbed a couple of each to try. The Strawberry Milk Mochi Sandwich is creamy and chewy, with a lovely strawberry milk aroma! Meanwhile, the Taro Pork Floss Sandwich is savory and delectable; both taro and pork floss are very local ingredients so taking a bite of this is a very Taiwanese experience for me.
Each sandwich is affordable (around NT$45) and makes for a perfect on-the-go meal. Do note that Hong Rui Zhen Sandwich introduces new flavors and limited edition variations from time to time. Special or seasonal flavors are only offered at certain store locations, so please visit their Facebook Page to stay updated.
