I am so honored to have been invited as a judge for The New Paper New Face 2013 this year, where the grand final was held at Takashimaya Square on 3 October. *WOOTZ*
This is a first-time experience for me, to be judging a modelling contest. When I first received the portfolios and profiles of the twenty finalists, I was cross-eyed as I had to review and rank the girls. Some are down-right gorgeous, others have bubbly personalities, some… still need time to bloom, but many of them have the potential to become a professional model or personality.
Now into its 21st year, this modeling contest that has launched the successful careers in modeling and show business for many girls. Former TNP New Face girls who have made their names in the modelling world include Victoria Bradbury, Nargis Musawwir, Vivien Ong, Christabel Campbell and Sara Chan. In entertainment, successful New Face alumni include Dawn Yeoh, Nura J, Julie Tan, Rebecca Spykerman, Jessica Tan and Jayley Woo. Other well known former New Face participants include radio deejay Jacqui Thibodeaux, modelling agency owner Serena Adsit and beauty queens Colleen Francisca and Genecia Luo.
Twenty fresh-faced and young aspiring girls made it into the finals. Besides getting her name added to the impressive list of past winners, the winner of The New Paper New Face 2013 will get a $10,000 cash prize and an exclusive feature in Her World, Singapore’s No. 1 women’s magazine. The 1st and 2nd runners-up will each win $5,000 and $3,000 cash respectively.
During the Grand Final hosted by Hossan Leong, I got to meet the finalists in person backstage (after doing my homework of viewing all their profile videos the week prior). The event was spectacular as I was treated to a three-part fashion show where the girls strutted down the runway. I was really floored by the styling of the fashion show – “Fun House” theme, styled by celebrated show producer and Singapore’s Godfather of Fashion, Daniel Boey. The clothes that the girls modeled that evening are from Neulook, Levi’s, and two indie Singaporean design labels: Revasseur and L’ile aux Ashby. I couldn’t stop gawking at all the clothes, they were super duper cute! Vibrant, young, stylish, bursting with patterns and textures, the expert styling of these outfits made the girls look ultra chic and smashing! Very tastefully put together – kudos to Daniel and team for such a fantastic job.

This part of the fashion show is super crazy adorable, as the finalists walked down the runway with their “mini-me”s! These little ones totally stole the show. :) :) :)

The winners this year are: Noelle Woon (1st place), Jade Rasif (2nd place) and Tan Ying Yi (3rd place). While the three title-winners were part of my top picks, there’s one more girl whom I was super duper rooting for but I guess the other judges didn’t agree so she didn’t make it into the top three. :(
I won’t say who that girl is, but I firmly believe that she has great potential to make it big; in fact as I’m writing this, I just found out that she catwalked for FIDé Fashion Week 2013’s Japan showcase last week – and we know what a big deal FIDé can be. Haha! I have an eye for spotting talents and can smell them from a gazillion miles away. Didn’t get invited as a judge for nothing, yo. }:P
This has been a tremendous experience for me and I’m really happy I was invited to be a judge for TNP New Face 2013. Great fun, great girls, great fashion show, great potentials. :) Thank you, The New Paper!
