How’s the pillow that you’re sleeping on these days? Sleeping on a good pillow can really make all the difference when it comes to quality sleep and overall well-being. I’m trying out the Origin Superior Coolmax Latex Pillow, and while tossing and turning in bed for many nights, I am also learning something new about sleeping positions and how they affect us.
Before I go to bed, I normally read a book while lying on my side in a semi-fetal position. Sometimes I end up falling asleep in this position, otherwise I sleep on my back. In either position, when a pillow is too high it is not comfortable for me at all and the next morning I’d wake up with a stiff neck. Not getting quality sleep makes me irritable, so sinking into a plush and proper pillow every night is a necessity that we don’t think much about – but IMO we should.
What’s Your Sleeping Position?
1. On Your Back
2. On Your Stomach
3. On Your Side
4. In the Fetal Position
1. On Your Back
According to National Sleep Foundation in the US, even though sleeping on your back is not the most popular position (only 8% of people sleep on their backs), it’s the best and healthiest option. Because it allows your head, neck, and spine to rest in a neutral position. If you’re a back sleeper, the Origin Superior Coolmax Latex Pillow is ideal because it moulds to the shape of the head and provides responsive support.
When you sleep facing the ceiling, this position also helps to ward off gastric discomfort aka acid reflux. As long as the pillow elevates and supports your head enough and you keep your stomach below your esophagus to prevent food or acid from coming up your digestive tract. The Origin Superior Coolmax Latex Pillow is made of latex foam which is denser compared to memory foam, so this is the pillow for you when you need elevated support.
2. On Your Stomach
I don’t find this position comfortable at all, but 6% of adults sleep in this position. You know how when you go for a massage but the massage bed doesn’t have a donut hole for you to put your face and head in while lying down on your stomach? No matter how many times and how often I turn my head from one side to the other, it is very very uncomfortable. And eventually it leads to neck pain! While this position is best for heavy snorers, it’s putting pressure on all the muscles and joints so it can’t be good.
When there’s no choice and you must sleep on your stomach, it is suggested that while lying face down we prop up our forehead with a pillow so that we can breathe. I went to a massage place once where they placed a rolled up hand towel beneath my chest while I lay face down; I remember it helped to keep my neck and spine straight during the session… it was tolerable.
3. On Your Side
15% of adults choose to sleep in this position, where your torso and legs are relatively straight. Your spine is elongated in this position, so it helps to relieve back and neck pain. If you’re prone to snoring, you’re less likely to snore in this position. But the downside of this position is, half your face is smushed against a pillow so sleeping on your side can lead to wrinkles.
4. In the Fetal Position
This is the most popular sleeping position and 41% of adults sleep this way (me included!). What makes this different than the position above is that your torso is hunched and your knees are bent. Those who sleep hugging a bolster would know that this position is highly comfortable. Personally I think this position is very helpful whenever I have an aching neck. It’s not so good when you have back pain though, for that you can also reduce the strain on your hips by placing a pillow between your knees.
Sometimes when I sleep, I like to tuck a hand under the pillow to feel the coolness of the fabric. You know what I’m talking about, right? From the name, we can all guess that the Origin Superior Coolmax Latex Pillow has cooling properties. I read the product specs and found out that the pillow comes with a removable Tencel fabric pillow cover so it can be machine washed and stays hygienic. Tencel fabric is comfortable and soft, it is lightweight and cooling which makes it ideal for sleepless nights.
After I learned about the different sleeping positions and how they affect our well-being, it occurred to me that having a pillow that can supports any of the four sleeping positions above would be awesome. Regardless of the sleeping position you favor, I think the Origin Superior Coolmax Latex Pillow can suit your needs.
