Poh Heng introduces ORO22 Leather – its boldest collection yet as part of its annual fashion event Gold Uninhibited 2012. Matching the elegance and luxury of Gold with the rebellious and rugged side of leather, this powerful pairing propels the place of Gold in fashion to one that is edgy yet versatile and wearable. ORO22 Leather, where avant garde meets rock and roll, is the epitome of 22K Gold as everyday luxury.
I went to the Gold Uninhibited 2012 runway show and was wowed by the chic jewelry that were featured.
As Singapore’s pioneer jeweller and leader in gold for more than 60 years, Poh Heng has led the way in establishing the local jewellery scene. Gold has been highly valued in many societies throughout the ages. In keeping with this it has often had a strongly positive symbolic meaning closely connected to the values held in the highest esteem in the society in question. But from what we know about gold jewelry in modern context, it has sorta taken second place in terms of chic factor and trendiness (the top favorite being platinum amongst style-conscious wasps these days). Seriously, not many people buy and wear golden wedding bands anymore nowadays. My dad disapproved of my misplaced disdain towards gold; I once got schooled big time on how gold will never, ever lose its worth so I was told to appreciate all the gold jewelry that my late grandma had given me. Truthfully, I have indeed found a new appreciation towards gold and mark my words, what’s retro will be new and popular again. One day everyone will favor gold again as a style statement.
It seems that in keeping with my musing in the previous paragraph, with the introduction of ORO22, Poh Heng has successfully brought the trend of wearing gold into the 21st century, as the only Singaporean jeweller with a signature premium 22K gold brand for today’s modern women. Matching the elegance and luxury of gold with the rebellious and rugged side of Italian leather, this powerful pairing propels the place of gold in fashion to one that is edgy yet versatile and wearable.
At the fashion show, I was kinda balking at first about being surrounded by a bunch of grannies and middle-aged aunties (presumably loyal long-time customers of Poh Heng; the “gold-wearing crowd” I’d say). Yet it was a cool event with wine and canapés. Plus a photo booth (*SCREAMED IN EXCITEMENT*) and a beautiful display section of ORO22 jewelry, which event guests could fondle and try out.
And then the fashion show itself started and the Poh Heng models began taking centre stage donning all these beautiful necklaces and bracelets. One of the pieces which caught my eye was this wide leather collar-type black necklace, with gold rings embedded into it. It was gorgeous! With matching arm cuff too. And then there were the colorful leather bracelets (black, brown, fuchsia, olive, green, purple, red) stacked together for an arm party on many of the models (who were outfitted by the kickass outfits at Blackmarket, btw) — niiiiiice! I dunno how the grannies feel about the jewelry, the bareback short dresses or the drum-n-bass runway music (too avant-garde for por por eh?), but I loved everything.
A closer look below at some of the signature pieces in the Poh Heng ORO22 Leather collection.
Chic, right?
Poh Heng ORO22 Leather collection breaks convention and revels in the unexpected and glamorous. Gold is now illuminated in a whole new light by unexpectedly pairing it with Italian leather. By playing with colored leather pieces, Poh Heng has created a fashion-forward and incredibly versatile way of wearing high karatage gold jewellery . Por por will still be a loyal customer and if she happens to be gifting these pieces to her daughters-in-law or granddaughters, I’m sure these gorgeous pieces will be welcomed as modern family heirlooms. (No more ching-chong hugeass golden phoenix tablet as wedding banquet adornment, whoohoo!)
PS: Poh Heng ORO22 Leather collection will be available at all Poh Heng stores in September 2012.
