Sweet Charity is a dessert-driven initiative for the whole month of October, during which $5 from each signature dessert ordered at 30 participating restaurants benefits the NUH Kid’s Heart Fund.
Following its successful launch last year, Sweet Charity Month returns this October with even more restaurants serving up tantalizing treats that allow you to use your sweet tooth for a good cause. The organizers, collectively known as the Ministry of Desserts, have a sweet spot in mind for 2012 – with a target to raise $100,000 to benefit this worthy cause.
I was invited to the Sweet Charity Gala and got sneak previews of some of the desserts that will be featured this month at participating restaurants.
It was a dark and rainy night that evening, but it didn’t dampen anyone’s mood because a gorgeous array of desserts were laid out inside The White Rabbit restaurant, waiting to be enjoyed along with free-flow champagne. Below are some of the lovely desserts for your viewing pleasure.
CHERRY TEACAKE (P.S. Cafe)
ORANGE KAFFIR LIME BREAD & BUTTER PUDDING (Wok & Barrel)
COCOA JAVA BROWNIE (Hummerstons)
RED VELVET CHOCOLATE (Epicurious)
ONDEH-ONDEH CUPCAKE (Preparazzi)
SALTED CARAMEL TRUFFLE TART (Plain Vanilla Bakery)
LEMONGRASS CRÈME BRÛLÉE (Patara)
UMESHU JELLY (Sansui)
THE WHITE RABBIT CRÈME BRÛLÉE (The White Rabbit)
MANGUE SHORTCAKE (Canelé)
BLUEBERRY WAFFLES WITH CRUNCHY STREUSEL (OverEasy)
CHOCOLATE GANACHE TART (Tanjong Beach Club)
I got to meet Madam Tan from Wok&Barrel, she’s a wonderful gal and I enjoyed my conversation with her that evening. I must visit her restaurant soon!
What can be sweeter than having your cake and eating it too? In between sampling the desserts (with a flute of champagne on hand, of course), I made my contribution and donated to the NUH Kid’s Heart Fund, as per the direction of my boss.

Here’s my boss: the BIG SPENDER CHARITY-LOVING KITTY. She could’ve made her regal appearance at The White Rabbit that evening but ya know, she’s not fond of the rain and prefers the comfort (and safety) of her carpeted throne at home. However, she purred in approval upon seeing visual evidence of the donation I’ve made on her behalf. {:)
To participate and do your part for Sweet Charity, below are a few ways you can dig in and help out:
• $5 from each signature dessert ordered at participating restaurants will directly benefit the NUH Kid’s Heart Fund.
• 30% of proceeds from select whole, takeaway desserts (cakes, pies, baked goods) will be donated.
• Chope will donate $1 for each dessert ordered online.
Alternatively, if you’re on a diet or something, you can donate directly online (info on the Sweet Charity Month website). But I say, screw the diet, dig into the creme brulee, brownie, red velvet cake and also take a huge bite outta the salted caramel truffle tart – which I enjoyed tremendously that evening, btw!
Don’t be stingy, give generously and the kids, along with your sweet tooth, will thank you.
