New fashion brand Whole9Yards celebrates its debut collection of vintage-inspired clothing and accessories that embrace feminine beauty with timeless pieces that combine romantic and delicate looks of the past with contemporary styling and fit to appeal to the modern woman. The debut collection celebrates ‘The Golden Age of Fashion’ of the 1950s, and many of the pieces are created with classic design elements such as the iconic 50’s hourglass silhouette and authentic lace, juxtaposed with modern geometric prints and contrasts of transparent and solid fabrics.
When I first looked at the brand’s lookbook and online store, there were several pieces which stood out for me – particularly the Knitted Embroidery Bomber Jacket (S$349) which is a fun and playful modern interpretation of the classic cardigan. I was invited to the showroom for a private viewing to take a closer look and tried on some of the clothings that are distinctively Whole9Yards’. Dresses are a focal point of the brand, making up more than half of the collection and representing the feminine aesthetics behind the brand. But I noticed that many of the separates: jackets, sweaters, trousers, skirts – have also been designed with interesting modern details and high-quality fabrics backed by fine sewing process.
While the overall collection is a wee too demure and delicate for my personal style, I do appreciate that many pieces have interesting details such as pleats, peplum flares as well as the textural play on different fabrics and prints. I can’t quite see myself pulling off many of the looks (uh… I’m not typically associated with words like delicate and demure), but the patterning techniques and artful styling make many pieces in the collection covetable.
